Overview

Hyundai has always been appreciated for the impressive design, technology and feature loaded vehicles offered to the masses for their delight. While catering to the auto enthusiast all over the world, Hyundai has also made its mark within the families to offer vehicles which promises more than just commutation. One such entrant from Hyundai’s stable is the entry level compact hatchback Eon which has been in the auto markets not long ago with its inception in 2011. Eon entered Sri Lankan shores in 2014 post its launch in India in 2011.

Hyundai Eon is offered in 6 variants in Sri Lanka namely, D-Lite, D-Lite(O), ERA, MAGNA, MAGNA (O), SPORTZ. The car makes a chic way to get around traffic and congested roads with its nimble and efficient design. Hyundai has introduced Eon with a 5 door avatar which comes equipped with a 814 cc MPI engine which makes up for a decent performance delivering optimum fuel efficiency. The 814 cc engine is capable to put the power output of 56 PS at 5500 rpm along with the peak torque of 75 Nm at 4000 rpm. The silk smooth 5 speed manual transmission system ensures high level of involvement with maximizing the fuel economy. The 0.8 litre catches the top speed of 140 kmph while crossing the speedmark of 100 kmph within 16.6 secs. Further engineered to offer the optimum fuel economy the car puts the fuel consumption of a class leading 21.1 kmpl. The car is oriented for the customer who desire the family car which is not only good at looks but also impressive at drive and carries an affordable tag. The compact design of the the car is attractive and manifests stylish exteriors which is quite distinct in its segment. The signature grille is carved with the swept back headlamps while the fog lamps are housed by the front bumpers. The wide windshield eases the driving by giving a clear and wide view. The rear is embellished with the rears stop lamps which also plays the role of safety. The two tones interior is plush and impressive to sit and rive while the ample of space is rendered with the plenty of ease to all controls. The 3 small cylinder engine allows the car to make the improved fuel economy which is better than most of the cars in this segment. The 814 cc engine puts the overall fuel economy of 21.1 kmpl which is quite impressive especially for the city commute.

The engine is capable to churn out the power output of 56 PS at 5500 rpm while generates the torque of 75 Nm at 4000 rpm. Although Eon is not really oriented for the performance enthusiast owing to its smaller capacity engine, but this little hatchback still manages to clock decent figures w.r.t its segment. It is capable to offer the impressive top speed of 140 kmph while crossing the speedmark of 100 kmph at 16.6 seconds.

Exterior

The sporty and stylish compact impresses with the dynamic character lines and innovative touches which create the ride which never compromises on style. The attractive and eye catching look of the car is built with the surface lines over the bonnet which is carved elegantly. The adaptive headlamps are carved beautifully which makes the everlasting impression with compact persona. In front, the single slat chrome coated radiator grill looks fine with the large air intake integral to sporty look and maximizes the engine and radiator cooling efficiency. The rear spoiler with LED mounted stop lamps makes the safety and also enhances the beauty while rear combination lamp are carved impeccably with the tailgate designed to harmonize with overall fluidic sculpture design language. Coming to the side profile, the body colour outside mirror extends its style while roof antenna ensures crystal clear reception of AM and FM radio signals. The fog lamps are scooped in the font bonnet while the back lights with extra large reflectors and tyres with 10 spoke signature diamond cup type wheel cover. The wide windscreen and body colored door handles and external mirrors gives good visual appeal while an impressive look is achieved with each and every detail embedded with elegance and impeccable designing.

The impressive compact car comes with attractive styling which is packaged within the dimension of 3495 x 1550 x 1500 mm with the wheelbase of 2380 mm which makes for decent space for the cars interior.

Interior

As you get inside Eons cabin, you are bound to notice the nicely laid two tone colour dashboard combined with hint of brushed aluminum which meets the practicality. The every component of the car is carefully worked upon and the hatchback is made quite comfortable on the inside. The combination of beige and black colour gives it the distinct look which is made more strong with appealing fit and finishes inside the cockpit. The curvy and spacious dashboard houses the instrument panel with three pods where the important information is displayed. The gauge cluster features the futuristic three barrel design with attractive chrome accents which makes for easy acknowledgment with easy access to vital vehicle information.

Interior comfort

The compact look is not the one which houses the scant cabin inside. Hyundai has endeavored to offer practicality in the compact car which can conveniently accommodate four to five passengers with ample of head leg and shoulder room. The front seats come with height adjustment and the vertical adjustable headrest gives the support to neck. The tilt steering column can be adjusted according to the driver, while the manual air conditioner is integrated with 4 sped blower driven by powerful motor. The storage system is quipped with the cup holders in center console which proves the convenience to keep the things. The storage system offers numerous cubbyholes to keep the knick-knacks which includes the door pockets, dashboard upper tray and back seat pockets. Further power windows are also available which can be opened with the press of a button.

Interior measurement

Eon is capable to offer ample space for five passengers. The decent headroom and legroom is offered with slight long wheel base and height while the cargo space is decent enough and approximated to 215 litres.

Engine and performance

Hyundai engines are known for their proved quality and efficiency where the Eon is quipped with a 0.8 litre engine making the power output of 56 PS at 5500 rpm along with the peak torque of 76 Nm at 4000 rpm. Three cylinder engine is mated with the 5 speed manual transmission which dissipates the power to front wheels.

Stereo and accessories

The driving experience is incomplete without the sense of music and entertainment. Here, the music system with advanced features like radio, CD player is integrated with the auxiliary input and USB port which allows to connect the device and play the song of your choice. The crystal clear gauge cluster features the elegant three barrel design which is intended to provide the relevant information like mileage, distance traveled etc.

Wheels

Being a small and nimble vehicle, Hyundai has equipped Eon with efficient set of wheels and tyres with a clear focus only on improving the car’s mileage. Depending on the variant you opt for, the starting three variants are equipped with smaller 12 inch wheels measuring 145/80 R12 while the top 3 variants are a scale up and come fitted with 13 inch rims. Tyre measurements for the top variants stands at 155/70 R13.

Braking and handling

Econ is equipped with the conventional disc and drum brake system for efficient deceleration while the gas type shock absorbers are intended to offer the optimum comfort. The McPherson strut suspension system makes the stability to car. The steering is quite smooth and light which makes the driving easy while the car is able to take small turns which makes it comfortable and convenient to get in and out of the city traffic.

Safety and security

Hyundai has never compromised with the safety and protection of occupants and showed the level of proficiency in its all equipment. The upper body is designed to effectively distribute the impact forces and ensure the least force is transferred to passenger space. The side doors are reinforced for maximum protection. Further the driver airbags system (only in the SPORTZ variant) and seatbelt reduces the injury in the case of collision. Moreover to make the vehicle safe, engine immobilizer is also available.
