Hyundai Sonata

Introduction

Hyundai Sonata is a 4 door sedan produced by South Korean automobile manufacturer Hyundai in year 1985. Sonata, currently in its seventh generation is designed by Christopher Chapman and Hyundai Stellar was its predecessor. The mid size car consists of front engine layout with front wheel drive in its current generation to deliver best performance output. The car has inherited its exterior and interior styling features from Hyundai HCD – 14 which was unveiled at New York International Auto show of 2013.

Engine, Mileage and Variants

Hyundai Sonata in Sri Lanka automobile market is powered by 3 engine variants of 2.4 litre, 2.0 litre and 1.6 litre. The 2.4 litre huge engine with GDI and inline 4 cylinders results in a power output of 185 Hp at 6000 rpm and 178 lb-ft torque at 4000 rpm. The 2.0 litre turbocharged engine with GDI and inline 4 cylinders burns out a maximum power of 245 Hp at 6000 rpm and 260 lb-ft torque at 1350–4000 rpm. The 1.6 litre turbo charged engine with GDI and inline 4 cylinders liberates a performance output of 178 Hp at 4000 rpm and Nm torque at 1500-4500 rpm. Sonata accelerates from 0 to 100 kmph in 8.9 seconds time attaining a maximum speed of 225 kmph. The combined fuel consumption over highways and city roads is 11.7 kmpl.

Exteriors

Hyundai Sonata carries a spellbound exterior look which is set perfectly by a refined fluid architecture. The three-dimensional hexagonal grille with chrome accent and an insignia placed on it adds a bold and sporty look to its exterior appearance. An intense light beam with high low adjust-ability is provided by the HID front headlights and front fog lamps. The rear fascia of Hyundai Sonata is further embraced by its leaf shaped LED taillights. The external mirrors are emphasized with LED turn signal indicators in it. The exterior measurements carried by Hyundai Sonata are 4854 mm X 1864 mm X 1476 mm (L X W X H) along with 2804 mm comforting wheelbase. Sonata comes with the option of choosing 16, 17 and as well as the top of the range 18 inch alloy wheels, which adds the charm to its drive.

Interiors

Hyundai Sonata comes equipped with a contemporary styled interior arrangement. Sonata comes standard with 8 inches touch screen display with a Radio, CD, MP3 player and USB, AUX compatibility in it. The touch screen display also incorporates a GPS navigation system in it. The instrument cluster is designed to display required vehicle information such as outside temperature, top speed and more. The 3 spoke leather wrapped steering wheel consists of audio control and cruise control switches embossed on it. The automatic air conditioner maintains a cool temperature inside the car with the help of front and rear vents available. Sonata offers very soothing interiors but it is definitely not the best in its class.

Safety, Braking and Miscellaneous

Hyundai Sonata ensures a safe ride to its passengers with the help of front, side and curtain airbags that comes packed in the car. The Blind spot detection prevent from collision while changing lanes. All the 4 wheel brakes comes locked with an Anti-lock braking system. Stability in Sonata is ensured by the Electronic Stability control system that prevent the vehicle from losing control. Night visibility during turns is enhanced by the Static Bending lights with HID front headlamps and fog lamps. Rest of the safety features introduced in Sonata are Hill assist control, tire pressure monitoring system, traction control system and rear view mirror.

Verdict

Hyundai Sonata is embraced with premium looks and offers a very quiet and spacious cabin. The bland driving dynamics offered by Hyundai Sonata at times makes its a second choice. Also, its interiors are not the best in its class.
